How to best care for my ceramic pieces

Greetings! I often receive inquiries about whether my items are dishwasher safe. Handmade pottery, while inherently durable, does require specific care to maintain its integrity over time. Let's explore the best practices for caring for these artisanal creations to ensure they remain in pristine condition for years to come.

First and foremost, unless explicitly noted in the product description, items from my shop are indeed dishwasher and microwave safe. The following guidance pertains not only to my products but also to other handmade stoneware and porcelain goods that have undergone kiln firing. This advice does not extend to air-dry or alternative clay materials.

Cleaning: While hand-washing is generally recommended for delicate handling, the dishwasher can be a convenient option. However, it's wise to inspect each piece beforehand, especially noting any delicate features that may be susceptible to damage in the dishwasher's agitation.

Un-glazed pieces, particularly those crafted from lighter clay bodies, may develop stains over time. This natural patina adds character, but prompt washing after use, particularly if the item contained substances like coffee or red wine, can help maintain its appearance.

Glazed pieces may feature delicate crackling within the texture, which enhances their aesthetic appeal. Consistent hand washing is advised, as certain dishwasher settings may accelerate the development of these crackles.

Heating: Microwaving handmade ceramics is generally safe, but caution should be exercised with pieces featuring metallic glazes. Avoid microwaving these items to prevent potential damage.

Lastly, refrain from baking handmade pottery in the oven, as the heat can compromise the glaze's integrity. By following these care guidelines, you can preserve the beauty and functionality of your handmade ceramic pieces for generations to come.
